15 Municipals, Districts Upgraded
The status of 15 Municipal and District Assemblies across the country has been advanced in accordance with Section 3(1) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).
It comes after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo granted Executive Approval for a proposal for the upgrade of some Districts to Municipalities and Municipalities to Metropolises.
“This was based on a request from the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGDRD) in line with the relevant legal provisions as stipulated in Act 936,” the sector Minister, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah said in a statement.
The earmarked assemblies include two municipalities and 13 districts. One of the thirteen districts- Gomoa East District Assembly- is being upgraded to a Metropolitan Assembly while the remaining 12 districts will now take on the status of Municipal Assemblies.
Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly and Techiman Municipal Assembly will now be Metropolitan Assemblies.
The Districts taking on Municipal status are Bole, Afigya Kwabre South, Atwima Kwanwoma, Atwima Nwabiagya North, Obuasi East, Sekyere South District, Ningo-Prampram, Anloga, South Tongu, Shama, Techiman North and Pru East.
The upgrade of these Municipal and District Assemblies is currently pending the finalisation of all necessary legal and administrative processes.
Meanwhile, he announced approval for the upgrade of Ho Municipality to Metropolis, Offinso North, and Birim North Districts to Municipalities are still pending with petitions for the creation of new Districts under consideration for necessary action.
