Judiciary and Executive Seemingly Colluding to Weaken Parliament- Speaker
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Bagbin has accused the remaining arms of government of working together to undermine the legislature’s authority and powers.
Addressing the press on November 6, 2024, he disclosed his suspicion of a collusion between the Executive and the Judiciary.
“The case raises legal questions and has profound implications for democratic governance,” he judged with respect to the impending case of the majority status in Parliament.
He added, “Judiciary and Executive are seemingly colluding to weaken Parliament.”
The Speaker recognizes that his outfit is not accorded the needed respect by the two arms, citing instances where President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has blatantly expressed his disregard for the august House.
He further affirmed that the Executive and Judiciary have “sinned” against the constitution and must “confess and repent of the sin”.
Criticism
Rt Hon Bagbin also chastised his members for cultivating the habit of running to the Supreme Court for interpretation.
In his view, Parliament weakens itself when members run to court in such instances.
He is a staunch believer that the matter in the Supreme Court could have been settled through “matured deliberation and compromises”.
He cited instances where he ruled in favour of “the-then majority group” and “Nobody cried and run to the Supreme Court then under the guise of constitutional interpretation”.
“Is it for the SC to decide which side is majority?”
