Fluminense Terminate Marcelo’s Contract

Brazilian Serie A side Fluminense FC have terminated the contract of left-back Marcelo Vieira following a contention with head coach Mano Menezes last Friday.

The 36-year-old was due to be subbed on during their 2-2 draw against Gremio; however, he was ordered back to the bench after he made an utterance that displeased the gaffer.

Detailing the incident at a post-match press conference, the coach said, “I was going to put Marcelo in at that moment, but I heard something I didn’t like, so I changed my mind.”

Subsequently, in a press statement on November 2, the club said it was parting ways with the player on mutual grounds.

“Fluminense FC and Marcelo Vieira announce the termination of the contract by mutual agreement between the parties… The institutional and emotional ties between Fluminense and Marcelo continue to be maintained.”

They expressed their admiration and high regard for Marcelo and his contribution to their development, referencing their decision to immortalize his name in the stadium at the Xerém training centre.

“Fluminense thanks Marcelo and will continue, as always, to support his success in all his challenges,” it added.

Meanwhile, Marcelo issued a message after the contract termination saying, “The truth, like the sun, will always rise.”

Trained in the youth categories, Marcelo returned to Fluminense in 2023, having participated in the conquest of the 2023 Campeonato Carioca titles, the unprecedented 2023 Conmebol Libertadores titles and the 2024 Recopa.
