We Came To Parliament In Peace, And We Want To Maintain It – NPP MPs

Following the occupation of their seats by National Democratic Congress (NDC) members in Parliament today, October 22, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have emphasized their commitment to peace and democratic principles.

Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, leader of the NPP caucus, stated that the party values Ghana too much to engage in conflict over the seats, noting that the Supreme Court has already addressed the issue and it now rests with the Speaker of Parliament.

“The NPP is for peace. Supreme Court has spoken and the entire case is in the hands of the Speaker of Parliament. The NDC members of parliament have occupied our seats upon our arrival and we can’t fight them for it because we value Ghana too much…. We came to parliament in peace, and we want to maintain it.”

“Our children, nieces, and nephews alongside other Ghanaians are watching us and they know NPP and they’re all looking forward to what action we’ll take so with this in mind we have to show that we accept democracy and act accordingly.” he added.

He further reaffirmed the party’s dedication to lawfulness and civil advocacy.

“The country is hereby informed that we’ll not give that lawless platform the NDC is seeking nor the theatre they so aggressively seek to disrupt our democracy and to disturb our nation.”

This comes amid tension as four seats were declared vacant tilting the balance of power to the NDC with the Supreme Court subsequently delivering a stay of execution order against the decree.

As the NDC side has vowed to “jealously” protect their earned majority status, the NPP side says the House has reverted to its previous status in their favour with the court order.
