NPP and NDC MPs Occupy Majority Side

As of 8 am on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, some members of the two sides of Parliament were already present at the premises of the Accra International Conference Centre which is being used as the interim meeting place for legislators, ready to enter the chamber and take their seats.

Each side claims the majority status of the House, and thus, all present at 8 a.m., after being screened, proceeded to take seats on the majority side.

The leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus, Cassiel Ato Forson led his side of about fifty members to take the seats on the right side of the Speaker while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) side of about five members led by the Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh also joined their counterparts on the right side.

Meanwhile, opemsuo.com is reliably informed that the Minority side of the Chamber remains deserted.

Among the members present in the chamber are Governs Kwame Agboza, Emmanuel Kofi Buah, Mahama Ayariga, Dominic Ayine, Colins Adomako Mensah and Thomas Mbomba.

Many are predicting a confrontation between the NPP and NDC sides today as the House convenes for the first time since four seats were declared vacant, tilting the balance of power to the NDC. The Supreme Court has since issued a stay of execution against the decree by the Speaker.

As the NDC side vows to “jealously” protect their earned majority status, the NPP side says the House has reverted to its previous status in their favour with the court order.

The House awaits other members and the Speaker to make ultimate decision on the development.
