GTEC Accreditation Notice Pertains to Premises Not Programme- UCC

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has provided clarity after the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) flagged 91 study centres used by the institution in offering various distance programmes across the country.

GTEC warned in a statement issued two weeks ago that applicants who pursue programmes at the said centres do so at their own risk, adding that academic credentials awarded to them won’t be recognized.

However, in a statement issued on October 17, UCC clarified that GTEC’s accreditation notice was not related to the programmes being offered by the centres.

“The notice issued by GTEC pertains specifically to prospective students enrolling in the 2024/2025 academic year. It refers to the accreditation status of certain premises, not the academic programmes themselves.”

It thereby assured prospective students that it is engaging GTEC over the specific centres that will be used for them.

“Once GTEC finalises the centres, the list of locations will be communicated to all prospective students,” it assured, adding that applications and admissions for the 2024/202S academic year are not affected by this notice.

To continuing students, the University said they are not affected by the notice.

“The notice does not affect continuing students. If you are currently enrolled in any of our programmes, your studies are not impacted by the premises accreditation mentioned in the notice. The academic integrity of our programmes remains intact, and we have taken all necessary step to ensure the continuation of your education at UCC without disruption.”

Background
In September, GTEC released a list of study centres unlawfully operated by the University of Cape Coast (UCC), the University for Development Studies (UDS), and the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

They include 91 used by UCC, 21 by UDS and 48 by UEW.
