Voters Register: NDC Readjusts Position

The country’s largest opposition political party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has readjusted its position following assurances that the discrepancies in the electoral roll have been duly dealt with.

A statement issued by the General Secretary of the party, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey said their leadership had decided to accept the conditions of the Electoral Commission (EC).

“The Functional Executive Committee of the NDC has deliberated and decided to accept the EC’s promise to release to political parties, the corrected/updated version of the 2024 Provisional Voters Register for scrutiny within one week.

“FEC further welcomes the decision by the Electoral Commission to re-exhibit the updated Provisional Voters’ Register. We however recommend that the re-exhibition exercise should be conducted online and offline at the exhibition centres.”

The party further called for a multi-stakeholder and interparty examination of the IT system of the EC to address the vulnerabilities that the EC has admitted to.

The NDC in the past weeks mounted strong advocacy for a forensic audit of the electoral as it characterized it as unfit for purpose. It was joined by other stakeholders and other political parties in the advocacy.

However, the EC held a televised IPAC meeting where the various political parties were allowed to present issues they may have spotted in the voters register.

“As a commission, we can confidently state that most of the discrepancies discovered to date have been resolved… That said, we have cleaned up the provisional voters register and corrected all discrepancies identified to date,” the EC Chair, Jean Mensah announced.

Jean used the occasion to rubbish allegations that the discrepancies in the provisional voters register were aimed at disenfranchising voters in certain parts of the country as she indicated that they cut across all regions.
