Prez Sets Up Ad Hoc Committee over Galamsey
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has for the second time in his administration set up a five-member ad hoc committee to look into the heightened illegal mining activities in the country.
The Ministry of Information in a statement released on Friday, September 13, 2024, announced the development.
The committee headed by the National Security Minister, Hon. Albert Kan-Dapaah, are charged with the mandate of assessing the government’s efforts in dealing with illegal mining.
“On the instruction of the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, an ad-hoc Ministerial Committee has been set up to engage all stakeholders to assess the government’s efforts in dealing with illegal mining.”
The remaining members of the Committee are the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor, the Minister for Defense, Hon. Dominic Nitiwul, the Minister for Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions, Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah and the Minister for information, Fatimatu Abubakar.
Concerns about illegal mining have exponentially been on the rise in recent days following its seeming escalation as a section of the public has been dragging the country’s president for failing at the fight.
Some stakeholders have urged the President to declare a state of emergency and temporarily ban small-scale mining.
