Ghana Medical Association Strikes Over Sale of SSNIT Hotels

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has declared an indefinite industrial action to protest the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT)’s decision to sell 60% of its shares in four hotels.

“Organised Labour of which Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is a member has declared an indefinite industrial action.”

The GMA’s National Executive Council (NEC) detailed the industrial action’s roadmap in an official statement released today.

The three-phase action will unfold as follows:

– 15th – 17th July 2024: Withdrawal of Out Patient Department (OPD) services
– 18th – 21st July 2024: Withdrawal of emergency services
– From 22nd July 2024 onwards: Total withdrawal of all services

The strike follows a directive from the Organised Labour for all workers to lay down their tools. They argue that the sale is not in the best interest of Ghanaian workers and demand that SSNIT terminates the process immediately.

“From Monday 15 of July 2024, all workers in Ghana must not go to work until SSNIT publicly announces the termination of the process for the sale of its shares in the hotels,” the group announced in a press release.

The hotels in question are Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Elmina Beach Resort, and Ridge Royal Hotel.

Negotiations are currently ongoing for them to be sold to Rock City Hotel Limited, a company linked to the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.
