Kotoko Face Hearts In Democracy Cup Next Month
Asante Kotoko Sporting Club and Accra Hearts of Oak will lock horns in the maiden edition of the J.D.F Annan Democracy Cup instituted by the Parliament of Ghana.
The one-off game will take place in the home grounds of the Phobians on July 5, 2024, commemorating Ghana’s 30 years of Parliamentary democracy.
The winner will earn an opportunity to play against United States of America-based club, DC United, in Washington later in the year.
The competition was launched on Thursday, June 13, 2024 by Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, who seeks to leverage on sports to preach democracy and its preservation.
Speaking at the ceremony, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Simon Okraku pledged his support for it, stating football has its own role in governance.
“I hope that the new baby, the Democracy Cup, will be the platform that will help us towards achieving our targeted mission as a nation. I commit the support of the Football Association to this worthy cause. I also hope that we give space to our beautiful ladies to be active members of this product.”
He believes this will be replicated in the sub-region and Africa since it champions a good cause.
“Democracy is what we need! Democracy has come to stay and democracy has to be cemented. And if it is that football can play a part, the Football Association will stand shoulder to shoulder with the Parliament of Ghana to deliver another masterstroke.”
