MTN Announces Restoration Of Normal Internet Capacity
Telecommunication company MTN Ghana has announced the restoration of full internet network capacity following the disruption two weeks ago.
Though the company said the undersea cable repair works are still ongoing, it has managed to secure some capacity from alternative sources.
“We are happy to inform you that MTN has restored normal internet network capacity to provide improved data services. We appreciate your patience during the recent service interruption,” it said in a statement on March 24.
“Please note that the repair works on the undersea cables are still ongoing and we expect this process to take about 5 to 7 weeks. We are therefore utilising alternative cables to support our customers. We will update you when meaningful progress has been made on the repair works.”
Meanwhile, the company promised compensation for customers who lost special data bundles as a result of the disruption.
The country experienced an internet outage which impacted data and Voice over IP (VoIP) services of various telecommunication companies on Thursday, March 14.
The outage was attributed to a disruption in international undersea cables.
In an update on March 17, 2024, the National Communication Authority (NCA), said the approximate locations of the damage have been identified by subsea cable landing service providers with preparations to dispatch repair vessels to the location for physical assessment and restoration made.
It said it would take a minimum of five weeks for full-service restoration.
The update followed a meeting between the Authority and all four (4) subsea cable landing service providers (ACE, MainOne, SAT-3 and WACS); and the three (3) mobile network operators (AT, MTN and Telecel).
Meanwhile, the NCA has encouraged mobile network operators, internet service providers, and all other providers to actively participate in the operations of the Ghana Internet Exchange (GIX) to ensure an efficient local content delivery and a seamless Internet traffic exchange locally
