Teachers Strike: Schools Remain In Session
Pre-tertiary schools in the country will continue their sessions despite a declaration of industrial action by teachers, according to the Ghana Education Service (GES).
The Service in a statement said head teachers of public schools had been directed to take the sole responsibility for the safety of students in the absence of teachers.
“Heads of public Kindergarten and Primary Schools as well as Junior and Senior High Schools have been directed through the Regional and District Directors to mobilise their Management teams to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students in schools.”
Parents have thus been urged to keep calm while the service monitors the situation for a more suitable decision.
“Meanwhile, parents are advised to remain calm and be assured that management is closely monitoring the situation and advise on the way forward accordingly.”
Three teacher unions on Wednesday declared an indefinite strike action over their conditions of service.
A statement jointly signed by the unions cited setbacks in negotiating a Collective Agreement, a non-functional Scheme of Service for Teachers, delay in the distribution of the teachers’ laptops, rampant changes of the school calendar without recourse to teachers and the blockage of teachers’ salaries by the Office of Special Prosecutor.
