Asantehene Worried Over State of Sports in Ghana
It appears the current state of sports in the country is not a concern to just the teeming football fraternity but the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as well.
He expressed it during a courtesy call by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the African Games and the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), organisers of the President’s Cup.
The concern of the King goes beyond football as he recalls the country was once celebrated for producing the world’s finest marathon runners and boxers.
Beginning with football, boxing, marathons and other sporting disciplines, His Majesty called for monitoring of promising athletes from schools through the inter-college sports competitions.
“Marathons and all other athletics have gone down and I hope you use this opportunity to give it the popularity it needs. There used to be what was called Inter-Schools which saw all these sports bring out the country’s great athletes to represent the country at international competitions.
“We used to have the likes of Nsiah Asare. Ghana used to be fierce on the sports front but we cannot boast of that today.”
He also urged the authorities to put in place the right policies and measures to restore the glory of the country in sports.
Otumfuo further agreed to a meeting with the Chairman of GHALCA, Kudjo Fianoo to discuss the bolts and nuts of the problem as well as fashion out long-lasting solutions for them.
