Sagrenti War Durbar To Be Held Tomorrow
The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will superintend over the second event for the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Sir Garnet Wolseley War.
Dubbed the “Kuntunkuni” Durbar, it will be held at Dwabrem at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on February 8, 2024, and will be attended by traditional rulers, ministers of state, foreigners and other dignitaries.
At a press conference on February 2, Juabenhene Nana Otuo Serebuo said some stolen Asante artefacts which found their way to the Fowler Museum will be officially presented to Otumfuo at the Durbar after a successful negotiation with the Museum.
Dress code for the event is black as Asanteman reflects on the ravages of the war that left Kumasi in ruins.
The durbar succeeds a symposium held over the war at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on February 6, 2024.
Speakers for the symposium included Prof. Emmanuel Akyeampong, the Oppenheimer Faculty Director of the Harvard University Centre for African Studies, Dr. Tom McCaskie, the Head of the Centre of West African Studies at Birmingham University Prof Samuel Ntewusuo, Prof Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Prof Eugenia Anderson, all from the KNUST.
The event at the Great Hall culminated in the launching of a 700-page book titled “History of Asante”, authored by Otumfuo Sir Agyeman Prempeh II and edited by Dr. McCaskie. The book, among other things, captured the incidents of the War.
