Osei-Mensah Worried Over Felled Komfo Anokye Cola Tree
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon Simon Osei-Mensah has expressed worry over the chopped historic cola nut tree at Feyiase in the Ashanti Region of Ghana by some unknown person(s).
The tree, believed to have been planted by the foremost high priest of the Asante Kingdom, Komfo Anokye, was found only with its stump in the ground when residents woke up to daybreak on November 7, 2023.
Its trunk greeted residents lying beside the stump.
The news sent shockwaves across the country, dominating media and national discourse.
A visibly worried Osei-Mensah reacted to the development when he appeared before the Regional House of Chiefs on November 15.
He wondered, “Were we wrong to leave the tree when the road was being constructed? Didn’t the person think about the reason we spared it? What if the stump never sprouts?”
According to him, the tree carried a historical antecedent.
A pastor has been linked to the crime. The said pastor, yet to be identified, is reported to have contracted some young men in the community to cut down the tree.
Also, it has been reported that one person has been arrested in connection with the crime.
The Minister, however, failed to give any confirmation of these before the House.
