Ghana Flags To Fly At Half-mast In Tribute To Theresa Kufuor
The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has ordered flags to fly at half-mast in tribute to the country’s second First Lady of the Fourth Republic.
In a press statement, the Ministry of Information said the order also applies to all the country’s diplomatic missions.
The flags will remain in that posture for the next one week beginning on October 2, 2023.
“On the instructions of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, all flags across the nation and at Ghana’s diplomatic missions shall fly at half-mast from Monday, October 2nd 2023 to Sunday, October 8th 2023.”
The Ministry said the former First lady lived a life of compassion, unwavering dedication, and selfless service to the people of Ghana.
It added, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to President J.A. Kufuor and the family as we collectively mourn the loss of a remarkable woman who touched the hearts of many.”
On Monday, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of which Mrs Kufuor belonged issued an order for their flags to fly at half-mast too.
The Party recalled she dedicated her life to supporting her husband throughout his political career and to the service of humanity.
“Inspired by her profession as a nurse, Mrs Kufour championed the cause of improved healthcare in our country. Notably, she established the Mother and Child Community Development Foundation (MCCDF) that supports the prevention of mother to child transmission of diseases, including HIV/ AIDS.
“Mrs. Kufuor was also a beacon for female advancement, fostering initiatives to inspire and empower both young and adult females in various facets of life,” a statement released by the General Secretary of the Party, Justin Kodua Frimpong said.
In a tribute to her on his Facebook wall, President Akufo-Addo said she was “an invaluable and constant source of advice, encouragement and prayers” President Kufuor.
“Mama Theresa, as she was affectionately called, was a devoted companion of President Kufuor throughout their sixty-one (61) years of marriage…she was politically astute, and was a major contributor to her husband’s political success.”
Mrs Kufuor died on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at the age of 87.
