Opemsuo’s Nafisa Ibrahim Leads Team to Victory in U.S. Embassy Collaborative Programme
Opemsuo’s Nafisa Ibrahim, a remarkable young leader, has emerged as the driving force behind “The Detectors Team,” securing victory in a groundbreaking Youth Media Literacy Programme.
This collaborative initiative, orchestrated by Mobile Web Ghana in partnership with the US Embassy, aimed to educate and empower young individuals in responsible media consumption while countering the surge of misinformation.
This exceptional team comprised three from University of Media Arts and Communication (UNIMAC-GIJ) and one from 5 Star University.
The team members are Nafisa Ibrahim (UNIMAC-GIJ), Peter Aboko (UNIMAC-GIJ) and Darlington Wagner (5 Star University).
Nafisa, the spirited leader of “The Detectors,” took centre stage in a media interview to express her profound gratitude to God and to extend heartfelt appreciation to Mobile Web Ghana and the US Embassy.
She emphasised the pivotal role of continuous learning and the vital importance of vigilance when evaluating news content.
“The youth must never hesitate to learn and stay focused on their dreams. The public must be detectives concerning any news content they come across.”
Nafisa also shared her personal journey, highlighting how the sponsorship provided by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II played a pivotal role in enabling her to pursue higher education following her completion of secondary school.
In recognition of their remarkable achievements, both “The Detectors” and the second-place team, “Media Savvy,” received valuable gift packages, undisclosed opportunities, and certificates of excellence.
Commencing on December 9, 2022, the programme engaged participants in a blend of virtual and in-person sessions. These sessions covered a range of crucial topics, including media bias detection, cybersecurity, new media dynamics, and digital citizenship.
As the programme progressed, participants were assembled into groups and entrusted with projects to demonstrate their newfound knowledge and skills over an eight-month period.
The programme’s accomplishments were further amplified by the presence of renowned journalist Bernard Avle of Citi TV. Mr. Avle shared valuable insights into modern journalism practices, underscoring the significance of collaboration, integrity, training, and experience (CITE) in navigating the ever-evolving media landscape.
The Youth Media Literacy Programme has not only equipped young individuals with essential media literacy skills but has also fostered a sense of responsibility in consuming and sharing media content.
Nafisa Ibrahim is a member of Opemsuo Radio’s Amoawisi Kids programme.
