Ghanaian Soldiers are too Busy for Coups – Ex-Deputy Defence Minister 

Major Derrick Oduro, a former Member of Parliament for Nkoranza North and former Deputy Defence Minister, has dismissed the idea of Ghanaian soldiers organizing a coup, stating that they are too occupied with other duties.

In an interview on Opemsuo Radio’s Nkwantannanso with Kofi Boakye, Major Oduro explained that Ghanaian soldiers are engaged in various operations, including peace-keeping missions and internal security operations, which keep them busy and prevent them from contemplating or organizing a coup.

He emphasized that soldiers are not idle and do not have the leisure to consider coup attempts, as they are occupied with their responsibilities.

“The devil finds work for the idle hand. No soldier is free.  If they don’t have peace-keeping operations, they have internal operations in the country so everytime they don’t find it easy. So they won’t be idle to claim they have nothing doing to even think of coup to keep them busy.”

Major Oduro’s comments align with recent statements by Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) of Ghana.

Vice Admiral Amoama stated that the Ghana Armed Forces do not support coups and are committed to protecting the country’s constitution and the will of the people.

“The coups in West Africa are a major concern, but, for us, we are resolved to protecting the Constitution and the will of the people. If the people decide that democracy is the type of governance they want, then we need to respect that.”
