Ministry of Sports Says CK Akonnor Is Owed $220K
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has stated that the former coach of the Black Stars of Ghana, Charles Kwabla Akonnor is owed $220,000 following payments totaling $238,108.12 between October 2021 and July 2023.
In a statement, it noted that the figure is based on contractual agreements between the country and the coach.
This comes after the coach disputed a statement by the sector Minister to the effect that an amount of $100,000 was paid to the former upon the termination of his contract.
In a clarification, the Ministry said the termination of Coach Akonnor’s contract saw the payment of GH₵318,378.41, equivalent to $54,054.06 at an exchange rate of 5.89 on October 22, 2021.
This payment, it showed was followed by payments of GH₵335,675.71, equivalent to $54,054.06 at an exchange rate of 6.21 on February 10, 2022; GHC860,000 equivalent to $100,000 at an exchange rate of GHC8.6 on January 12, 2023; and $30,000 on July 27, 2023.
The amounts paid total $238,108.12 with an outstanding $220,000, the Ministry noted.
It furthered that “the Ministry of Youth and Sports would like to assure Coach Akonnor and the public that we have always been committed to fulfilling our contractual obligation.”
It, however, said that the delay in payment was due to financial constraints.
