Whether you Agree or not, we will Enforce it – KMA warns Tricycle Riders
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced that it will impose restrictions on the movement of tricycles, commonly known as ‘pragya’ and ‘aboboyaa’, within the Central Business District starting from July 1, 2023 whether or not the riders agree.
In an interview on Nkwantannanso with Agudey on June 14, Hon. Kwaku Appiah, CPC Assembly Member, explained that the ban was necessary due to the high level of “gross indiscipline” exhibited by tricycle riders on the roads and traffic congestion. Their behavior poses a danger to other road users and contributes to traffic congestion.
“They don’t respect rules. They don’t follow traffic regulations. It is meant to ease congestion because everywhere is choked,” he said.
When questioned about the assembly’s response if the riders oppose their decision, he affirmed that “the assembly is bigger than them”.
Therefore, anyone who disobeys the directive will face legal consequences.
He also mentioned that alternative routes are available for tricycle riders, and they are not required to operate within the Central Business District.
“For instance, they are not allowed to enter Kejetia when using Suame Roundabout, and they cannot use the overhead bridge to access Adum.”
According to Hon. Kwaku Appiah, a meeting has been held with the tricycle riders, and they have agreed to comply with the new directive. A final meeting will be arranged with the riders in the near future.
