Landlords to Face Prosecution for Lack of Toilet Facilities
Project Coordinator for the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area (GKMA) Household Toilet Project, Engineer George Asiedu, has warned that households in Kumasi and its environs without toilet facilities will soon have their landlords prosecuted.
That is if they fail to take advantage of the ongoing ‘One Household One Toilet Facility Project’ by the Sanitation and Water Resources Ministry for households with no toilet facilities.
Engineer George Asiedu speaking on Opemsuo 104.7 FM, explained the project is aimed at eliminating open defecation and addressing health challenges associated with open defecation. It is also in line with the United Nations SDG 6, which seeks to provide access to clean water and decent toilet facilities to improve the health conditions of people.
The project which aims at building 30,000 toilet facilities in the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area is expected to end by 2024.
“If by the end of the project you don’t have a toilet facility in your homes, we have trained Prosecutors who will be moving from house to house. If they find that you don’t have a toilet facility they will put you before court for the law to take its course”, he emphasized.
He noted that the government has absorbed 80% of the cost of construction and for that matter, house owners have no excuse to refuse to register for the toilet facility. He urged landlords to “get toilet facilities in their homes to bring open defecation to an end in the country”.
