Gov’t Doubles LEAP Grant- Ministry Of Gender

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has announced that the bi-monthly cash grant for the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program has been doubled from its original rate.

The increase is effective this year.

With the new rates, a one-member household that previously got ¢64 will now receive ¢128; the rate for a two-member household has been increased from ¢76 to ¢152; a three-member household from ¢88 to ¢176; and four or more households from ¢106 to ¢212.

This comes at a time the Ministry says it has included lepers and persons accused of witchcraft in the programme.

“We have also included those accused of witchcraft in the LEAP this year,” the sector Minister, Hon Lariba Zuweira Abudu, said, adding that lepers in Upper East, Upper West, Eastern, Volta, Central and at the leprosarium in Greater Accra have also been included.

Additionally, she said the Ministry is doing some pilot reassessment in some regions including Upper East, Upper West, Savannah, Northern Region and North East regions.

Meanwhile, she said payment of first cycle beneficiaries for 2023 will take place next week as the 2022 arrears have been cleared.

LEAP is a social cash transfer programme for the poorest households in Ghana with the goal of reducing poverty by smoothing consumption and promoting human capital development, according to the MoGCSP.
