African Students Stranded In Sudan

African students are calling on their governments for their evacuation from Sudan where conflict threatens to rip apart the country and its inhabitants.

In a video recording, a Nigerian student confirmed that students have been directed to take cover at the International University of Africa in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan where the war is concentrated.

Abdulaziz said only Africans are left at the shelter with the majority of them being Nigerians.

Aside from there, other students are taking cover in hostels, malls and others.

But he said European, American and Asian countries have evacuated all their nationals from the country.

Amidst fears of losing their lives, students also have to deal with food and water shortages.

“We are calling on those agencies and the governments that are responsible for the students of each nationality that they should redouble their efforts to evacuate the people because people are scared, people are hungry, people are thirsty,” he pleaded.

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, however, says Ghanaians in Sudan are safe.

“Government wishes to assure the general public, in particular, the families and acquaintances of Ghanaians in Sudan that efforts are being made to ensure their safety until they arrive in Ghana.”

In a statement on April 23, it noted that measures are underway to evacuate them from Sudan to Ethiopia and then finally to Ghana.

“Ghana Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, which concurrent accreditation to Sudan, working closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and the Honorary Consulate are coordinating the evacuation of our nationals and plans are currently underway to secure their safe passage to Ethiopia.”

A conflict erupted on March 15 between Sudan’s de facto Armed Forces and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

So far, it has been reported that 420 people have been killed and over 3,700 others including civilians and foreign nationals have been wounded in the conflict.

Countries have begun evacuating their nationals from Sudan.

On Sunday, France, the United Kingdom and the United States of America moved out their diplomats and their families.

The evacuation continues for all their nationals, according to reports.
