Mesut Özil Quits Football
Germany International, Mesut Özil has announced his retirement from professional football, a decision he said was birthed from a “thoughtful consideration”.
The midfielder played for Schalke, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Fenerbahce and Basaksehir in addition to his country, Germany.
The 2014 World Cup champion is being forced to hang his boots by injuries after appearing just eight times for his immediate past club in Turkey this season.
He leaves the stage after spending 17 years in football.
“In recent weeks and months, having also suffered some injuries, it’s become more and more clear that it’s time to leave the big stage of football”, the 34-year-old posted on social media.
According to him, playing professional football was a “privilege” and “an amazing journey filled with unforgettable moments and emotions”.
He expressed appreciation to all his family, friends, former club, coaches and teammates.
“Special thanks must go to my family members and my closest friends. They have been a part of my journey from day one and have given me so much love and support, through the good times and the bad.”
