Ghana Post To Launch Commemorative Stamp In Honour Of Otumfuo
A little over a year since the launch of a commemorative gold coin in honour of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, a commemorative stamp in his honour has been conceived by Ghana Post Company Limited.
There are plans to launch the philatelic stamps before 2024, the Managing Director of Ghana Post, Bice Osei Kuffour said.
He disclosed this when Management members of the Company visited the Manhyia Palace on January 26, 2023, on a duty call.
In 2021, Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) collaborated with the E On 3 Group, to launch commemorative gold coins in honour of Otumfuo for his contribution to peace, stability and development in the country.
It was the first time non-circulating commemorative coins were issued in the country.
The coins are 99.9 per cent assay at 24-carat fine gold, with a diameter of 37mm and weight of 31.104 grams each.
Its face bears the image of the Asantehene with the Adinkra symbols, “Bi Nka Bi and Mpatafo,” symbols of peace, harmony and reconciliation, the back or the reverse has the image of the Golden Stool (Sika Dwa), Ghanaian Times reports.
Mr Osei Kuffour told the media their visit was to inform the King about the International Intergovernmental Corporation and the Ghana Post Philatelic Committee’s proposal to launch the commemorative stamp in his honour.
According to him, the King accepted the proposal and nominated a member to serve on the Board to develop the philatelics.
“We had discussions on that and he has accepted the proposal and we will be working with his representatives at Manhyia to come up with themes for the stamp.”
The Company hopes to launch the stamp before Otumfuo’s 25th Anniversary in 2024.
He added, “these stamps will go all over the world because Ghana Post is connected and part of the international Postal Union and so these commemorative philatelic stamps will go all over the world. It’s a major tool for tourism in Ghana. All over the world wherever this stamp will get to, they will know that there is a great King in Ghana.”
