Over the weekend, the Rotary Clubs of Kumasi East (Host Club), Kumasi, Nhyiaeso, Ho and Accra-Spintex jointly donated medical items worth Ghc 25,000 to the Kumasi Central Prisons in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti Region.
The items donated include; BP testing machines, glucometers, vitamins, painkillers, dewormers, and infusions among others on Saturday, December 17, 2022.
The club also embarked on a Dental Screening Outreach at the same facility to help offer an opportunity for early diagnosis and treatment, dental health education, as well as institute preventive measures for the prisoners.
After careful diagnosis by the medical team, each prisoner from the male facility went away with a toothbrush and toothpaste to help prevent disease and provide treatment for the same procedures offered in the general diagnosis and (some) speciality practices.
Speaking to Rotarian President Sharon Afriyie Ofori-Kuragu (RP Shasta), President of the Rotary Club of Kumasi-East, the host club for the event, she stated the joint clubs are ready to carry out this exercise in the next three years sparkling with the dental screening.
“In collaboration with four other clubs, Rotary Club of Kumasi East, Rotary Club of Kumasi, Rotary Club of Kumasi Nhyiaeso, Rotary Club of Ho and Rotary Club of Accra-Spintex, we joined in today to undertake a health screening project at the Kumasi Central Prisons. We are members of Rotary International, which is business leaders who have come together to help solve problems around the world. We have seven areas of focus and one of them is disease prevention and treatment”, she said.
She stated the clubs’ intention to embark on this project in the next three years starting with the dental exercise..
“In every December, we help people with diseases and help with their treatments and that is why we are here at the Central Prisons, we intend to carry out this in the next three years starting, with the dental screening. We are today presenting items worth Ghc 25,000 to the Kumasi Central Prisons BP testing machines, glucometers, vitamins, painkillers, dewormers, and infusions and a whole lot”, she added.
The Second in Command of the Kumasi Prisons, ADP Alhaji Ousmane Tesembedo who accepted the donation on behalf of the Prison showed his appreciation to the Rotary Clubs for their kind gesture towards the prisoners.
“We are more than grateful for this wonderful gesture done to us by the Rotary Club, they gave us medicines, such as glucometer, eye drops etc. Sometimes, these medicines are hard to come by and they need to go and buy some of these drugs if they don’t fall within the health insurance. So we are very very grateful to the club for giving us such medicines”, he said.
In an interview with the President of Rotary Club-Ho, RP Simon Fafali Awumey, he said the initiative was to address the health concerns of the inmates of the Kumasi Prisons which fall under one thematic area the club is working on which is “Disease Prevention and Treatment”.
“We came here to do a dental screening to take care of their dental needs, so we shared some toothbrushes and pepsodents for them which will take them at least 2 to 3 months to take care of their dental needs. We also did a dental screening, we checked their tooth and those who have serious problems will be referred to Komfo Anokye to take them off”, he said.
“There are a lot of issues in the prisons, we are going back to mobilize ourselves and come back to see how best we can address those concerns as well”, he added.
