Newmont Hoping For “Thorough Investigations” Into Kenyasi Shootings

The Senior Vice President of the Africa Region of Newmont Gold Limited, Mr David Thornton says he is looking forward to a “thorough” probe by the Ghana Police Service into the shooting incident that transpired in November this year.

The incident happened on November 15 at Kenyasi Number 2 in the Ahafo Region and claimed the life of one person.

Injuries were recorded as well.

It began when police officers allegedly stationed at Newmont Mining Limited shot one person dead during an altercation with a motor rider, JoyNews reported.

Reports said that a revolt from the youth over the incident resulted in the shooting of four others injuring them.

Following that, irate youth of the area went on a rampage to protest and destroyed two vehicles in the process, the police said when it announced an investigation into the protest had been launched.

“The Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a shooting incident at Kenyasi in the Ahafo Region on 15th November 2022, which resulted in the death of one person and injury to four others”, a statement from the police said.

Telling Otumfuo about the incident, Mr Thornton who was at the palace with other members of the leadership of African Region Newmont on December 9 said he hoped for a thorough investigation.

“There was, unfortunately… a police shooting that occurred and an individual passed away. After this incident, we witnessed unrest by the community people who carried out vandalism. Everything is calm at the moment and we look forward to a thorough police investigation and understand how these things occurred and what we can learn from it”.

The delegation included Adiki O. Ayitevie – Vice President, S&ER, Kwame Addo Kufour – Vice President, Government Relations and Strategic Projects, and Joseph Danso – Snr. Manager S&ER.

Accompanying the delegation were Hon George Boakye, the Ahafo Regional Minister and Hon Ernest Kwarteng, the Municipal Chief Executive for Tano North Municipal.
