Management: Metro Mass Workers to Be Paid September Arrears On Friday
The Head of Communications at Metro Mass Transit Limited, George Asante has announced the company’s aggrieved workers will receive one out of the two months salary arrears on Friday, October 14 “all things being equal”.
Speaking on Eyewitness News monitored by opemsuo.com, the spokesperson of the company blamed its struggles on the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.
“For the past months now fuel prices have increased almost by 100%. It has actually affected our operation and the revenue mobilisation of the company. We are talking about Metro Mass, a company that is 100% IGF.
“We need to deploy the buses to mobilise the needed revenue to undertake certain activities. Now we are working nationwide with about 187 buses feeding 2,016 workers. These issues they are raising did not come overnight… The company’s arrears and statutory payments date back to 2016.”
He pointed out that the struggles of the company have to do with inadequate buses and not with the leadership.
He said the Managing Director has shown exceptional leadership which has provided a facelift for the company.
“Had it not been for the intervention of the current managing director they are asking to step down, trust me the entire company would have been grounded by now. It is by the intervention of this Managing Director that we’ve gotten some buses to be running now.”
Through his leadership, Mr Asante said, the Dutch government has promised to donate to Ghana 500 new buses.
“It’s not fair for the workers to demand the removal of the Managing Director due to a month’s arrears”, he added.
The Workers of the public transportation company, Metro Mass Transit Limited on October 12 began a sit-down strike.
The workers are protesting against Management’s failure to pay their two-month salary arrears.
Aside from that, the protesters also complain about poor conditions of service, and bad treatment from management and thus call for the head of the Managing Director.
The strike is reportedly in motion across the country.
Reports say the workers are at the various terminals but have refused to proceed with work.
The buses remain parked as the workers sit around, say reports.
The workers say they will put an end to their strike when the Managing Director of the company is dismissed.
Metro Mass Transit Limited was set up to provide reliable and affordable means of transport for commuters within villages, towns, and cities as well as provide intercity movement.
