Gov’t Bans Export Of Maize, Soya Beans, Rice Temporarily
The government of Ghana has banned the export of grains such as maize, rice, and soya.
This is among other measures adopted by the government to ensure food security in the country and enable households and farmers to cope and support a stable food supply.
The ban is an immediate measure, the Minister for Finance announced during the Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament.
He said that the “COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine War have combined to disrupt supply chains and increased transportation costs which are threatening food security globally. But, what the people of Ghana care to see is what their government is doing about it to ease the impact here”.
Other measures for food security announced by the government include; the promotion of the use of organic fertilizers and cultivation of crops such as roots which require less fertilizer; monitoring of food and input prices to pick early warning signals of potential food crisis in order to take prompt remedial action; and the finalisation of modalities for the haulage of produce from farm gates in food growing areas to the market centres.
