9 Drown as Boat Capsizes While Travelling from Yeji to Congo

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has reported the death of nine individuals following a boat accident in the East Gonja District of the Savanna Region.
Fourteen passengers were reportedly travelling from Yeji to Congo when the boat capsized near Mataiko due to severe weather on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
Five males were successfully rescued during a search and rescue operation, while nine others drowned.
Seven bodies out of the nine have been recovered. This includes two women and five children.
Search teams continue to look for 2 missing persons, according to the GMA.
“The GMA is gravely concerned to report that none of the passengers was wearing life jackets. This disregard for safety regulations was a major factor in this loss of life,” it said in a statement.
It further reminded the public that life jackets are a legal requirement for all water travel.
“The Authority remains committed to enforcing these laws to prevent future tragedies,” it noted, as it conveyed its deepest condolences to the grieving families.
