4 Arrested for ECG Meter Tampering
Four individuals including a foreign national have been arrested after they were fingered in a meter tampering allegation which has cost the nation some GH₵77,000.
The suspects have been identified as Wisdom Sewlorm, an agent, Ernest Afatsawu, an employee, Rulian Shan, owner of a Chinese plastic manufacturing firm who bought one of tampered meters and Ali Yakubu, his sales manager.
The manager and the sales manager were arrested on August 2, 2024.
According to Paul Abariga, the Director for Investigation, Prosecution and Security, at the ECG told the press the four will be put before court for prosecution after their investigation is concluded.
He explained that the investigation was initiated based on intel to the effect that some meters had been tampered with.
“There are meters that are being installed in many parts of our operational area and there have been some investigations reported to this directorate that some of the meters that are being installed are tempered with before they are installed so we undertook investigations, and we’ve come to realise that the intel that we’ve gathered, and the reports given to us are certainly true,” he is quoted to have said by CNR.
Their findings, also indicated that the implicated agents were issuing residential meters to manufacturing companies.
“Based on that we got for instance these four people arrested. They had a meter that was supposed to be residential and they were using it in a factory to manufacture plastic bowls at Oblogo near Weija.”
