22 To Be Put Before Court In Connection To Drivers Strike

Twenty-two (22) members of driver unions will be put before court today, December 7 for rioting during yesterday’s sit-down strike of commercial drivers.

The 22 were rounded by the police for various offenses, the police said in a statement.

They are said to have taken advantage of the strike to disturb public peace at Anyaa, Sowutuom, and Amasaman, some communities in the Accra Metropolis.

“The Police in Accra, on Monday, December 6, 2021, arrested 22 suspects for various offences such as rioting, causing damage, and blocking public roads within the Accra Metropolis during the nationwide sit-down strike by the members of the drivers’ union”, a statement from the police said.

It added that “All 22 suspects will be put before the court on Tuesday, December 7, 2021.”

A coalition of driver unions in Ghana directed members to embark on a sit-down strike yesterday to cause the government to scrap some taxes on fuel, a move that rendered passengers stranded.

Some lorry stations were turned into a football pitch where drivers and their “mates” displayed some football skills.

In areas where few drivers tried to defy the directive, disturbances ensued.
