KNUST Must Strengthen Governance To Achieve Strategic Goals – Otumfuo

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has called on the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to strengthen its governance structures and accountability systems to translate its strategic vision into tangible results.
He said reviewing the university’s legal framework and administrative structures must go beyond making changes on paper to creating an institution that is more responsive, innovative and capable of delivering on its objectives.
Speaking at the 14th Global Biennial Congress and Alumni Homecoming in Kumasi on Friday, October 23, 2026, Otumfuo said effective governance was essential to ensuring that the university’s ambitions were achieved.
He commended the university’s Council, Management and other contributors for their work on reviewing and developing its structures but stressed the need for the reforms to improve the institution’s operations.
“However, I wish to emphasize that this exercise must go beyond revising legal provisions and administrative structures. It should create a university that is more responsive, more accountable, more innovative, and better equipped to deliver results,” he said.
He further urged the university to establish governance arrangements that encourage responsible decision-making, collaboration and discipline in implementing its plans.
“We must ensure that our governance arrangements enable excellence rather than frustrate it,” he said.
Otumfuo also highlighted the importance of aligning the university’s strategic plan, legislative framework and statutes to provide a clear direction for its development.
He said the success of the reforms should not be judged by the quality of the documents produced but by how effectively they helped the university fulfil its mission.
“The success of these reforms will not ultimately be measured by how well the documents are written. It will be measured by how effectively they enable the university to fulfill its mission,” he said.
He added that the university must also strengthen its relationships with alumni, industry and other partners to support its development and achieve its ambition of attaining global eminence.
