We Might all Die and Leave Behind the Country If Galamsey Persists- Otumfuo

The Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has stated that Ghana risks dire consequences if the destruction of its water bodies through illegal mining activities persists.

Speaking during an inspection of the extent of damage to natural resources as part of the launch of the Jimi Land and Water Reclamation Project in Obuasi on October 14, 2026, Otumfuo issued a stark warning to the youth.

He said the nation could be left desolate if illegal mining and other harmful activities persist.

“We might die and leave the country behind if this persists.”

While acknowledging the high rate of youth unemployment, His Majesty said joblessness cannot be used as an excuse for destroying water bodies.

“I understand young people don’t have work, but that can’t be an excuse for the destruction of our water bodies,” he told the youth.

“If we destroy our water, what will become of us?”

The project, which was launched with the ceremonial planting of a Ceiba seedling by the Asantehene, aims to reclaim 670 square kilometres of degraded land and water in the Jimi enclave.
