Ghana to Apply for BRICS Membership, Seeks India’s Support — Ablakwa

Ghana will formally apply to join BRICS as part of a strategic push by the Mahama government to diversify its international partnerships and deepen South-South cooperation, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced.
Mr Ablakwa disclosed that Cabinet had taken the decision to pursue membership of the bloc and formally requested India’s support for the bid.
“The cabinet of President John Dramani Mahama has decided that Ghana should put in a formal application to join BRICS, and you do know that India is a major founder of BRICS. It’s a very strategic decision. We formally sought India’s assistance in that regard,” he said.
According to the Minister, the government believes Ghana must diversify its international engagement beyond traditional partners.
He said Ghana has always found a trusted partner in India, recalling that the founding presidents of both countries were key leaders of the Non-Aligned Movement, with cooperation dating back to the 1960s and 70s in multilateral fora.
“We believe that joining India in BRICS will give us economic benefits, will diversify our partnership and will also allow us to have more cooperation within the global south-south engagement,” Mr Ablakwa added.
