Ghana Can No Longer Secure Nation From Accra Alone- Interior Minister

The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, says Ghana must decentralise its security management if it is to deal with modern threats.
According to him, the era when national security is managed solely from Accra is over.
“National security cannot be secured from Accra alone but must be built in regions, districts and communities,” he stated.
He was speaking in Kumasi at a workshop for members of the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) on the implementation of the Security and Intelligence Agencies Act, 2026 (Act 1168).
Hon. Muntaka charged the MMDCEs to lead intelligence-led prevention at the local level, moving away from reactive security management.
“Let us move from reaction to prevention, from fragmented efforts to coordinated action and from information sharing to intelligence-led security management,” he said.
He noted that as the closest government representatives to communities, MMDCEs are well positioned to detect early tensions through interactions with chiefs, religious leaders, youth groups, traders, farmers and civil society.
The Minister stressed the need for stronger information and intelligence sharing among security agencies, local assemblies and community leaders, adding that no single institution has all the information needed to manage today’s security environment.
He also tasked REGSEC to provide leadership in identifying security patterns and escalating cross-district threats early, rather than treating incidents in isolation.
Hon. Muntaka commended the Ashanti Regional Minister and REGSEC for their commitment to peace but warned that modern threats require early detection and coordinated action.
