PURC Maintains Electricity, Water Tariffs for Fourth Quarter of 2026
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced that electricity and water tariffs for the Third Quarter of 2026 will remain unchanged in the Fourth Quarter.
The decision means consumers will continue to pay the same rates effective October 1, 2026.
In a statement issued on September 24, 2026, the Commission said the decision is in line with its mandate to review tariffs on a quarterly basis to reflect developments within the quarter.
It explained that the quarterly reviews are undertaken to maintain the real value of the existing tariffs, which would enable utility service providers to remain financially viable and to deliver on their services to consumers, bearing in mind the impact of these tariffs on the wellbeing of consumers in general.
According to the Commission, the operational factors considered during the quarter are the exchange rate between the Ghana Cedi (GHS) and the United States Dollar (US$), domestic inflation rate, electricity generation mix, and the cost of fuel, mainly natural gas, to power the thermal plants.
On the Ghana Cedi-US Dollar exchange rate, the Commission said it applied a Weighted Average Ghana Cedi-US Dollar Exchange Rate of GHS11.5646/US$1.0000 for the Fourth Quarter of 2026, which indicates a 3.04% depreciation of the Ghana Cedi from the applicable Third Quarter rate of GHS11.2228/US$1.0000.
On inflation, the Commission applied an average annual inflation rate of 4.97% for the Fourth Quarter of 2026, indicating an upward review of 44.89% from the previous quarter’s average annual rate of 3.43%.
For the price of natural gas, the Commission applied a Weighted Average Cost of Gas (WACOG) price of USD7.8739/MMBtu, indicating a downward adjustment of 1.07% from the previous quarter’s rate of USD7.9798/MMBtu.
On the electricity generation mix, the PURC said projected generation from hydro sources inched up by approximately 16.03%, moving from 20.99% in the Third Quarter to 24.35% in the Fourth Quarter.
On the other hand, projected generation from thermal sources declined by approximately 4.24% in the Fourth Quarter, from a high of 79.01% in the Third Quarter to 75.75% in the Fourth Quarter.
