Ghana Maritime Authority Refutes Claims That Vessels In Ghana’s Waters Aren’t Monitored

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has refuted claims that its vessel monitoring system is ineffective and that vessels sailing within Ghana’s waters are not being monitored.

The claims were made by former presidential staffer Dennis Miracles Aboagye during television interviews on Tuesday.

“The GMA categorically refutes these claims. They are false, misleading, and do not reflect the operational reality of maritime surveillance in Ghana. The Authority’s surveillance system for monitoring vessels within Ghana’s maritime jurisdiction is operational,” the GMA said in a statement.

According to the Authority, it continues to use its maritime domain awareness tools to monitor vessels and maintains 24-hour surveillance and monitoring of vessels in Ghana’s maritime domain. It added that the system is also used for monitoring and protecting offshore oil and gas facilities, pipelines and submarine cables.

The GMA said it uses standard operating procedures to track vessels, verify identity and compliance, and support safety, security, and environmental protection within Ghana’s maritime domain, stressing that the suggestion that vessels in Ghana’s waters are not monitored is untrue.

“The GMA remains committed to continuous surveillance and the protection of Ghana’s maritime interests. We urge the public to disregard the claim and to rely on official communications from the Authority,” the release signed by the Public Relations Unit added.
