MoFA Launches National Horticultural Seed Roadmap to Boost Access to Quality Seeds

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has launched the National Horticultural Seed Roadmap to strengthen Ghana’s horticultural seed sector and improve farmers’ access to quality seeds and seedlings.

The Roadmap was launched on Thursday, September 17, 2026, in Accra.

It provides strategic direction for the next three to five years, with a focus on increasing the availability, accessibility and use of improved planting materials suited to Ghanaian conditions.

Speaking at the launch, the Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. John Setor Dumelo, described the Roadmap as an important step towards building a stronger and more responsive seed system for the country.

He said the initiative will help address longstanding challenges in the horticultural value chain by ensuring that farmers have timely access to affordable, high-quality seeds.

According to MoFA, implementation of the Roadmap will prioritise strengthening local seed production and enterprises, improving farmers’ access to quality seeds and seedlings, supporting the development of varieties suited to Ghanaian conditions, and establishing clear responsibilities, timelines and financing arrangements.

The Netherlands Embassy, represented by Madam Inge Tenniglo, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ghana’s horticultural seed sector and described the Roadmap as laying the foundation for the future of Ghana’s horticulture sector.

The launch brought together stakeholders from government, the seed industry, research institutions, farmer organisations and development partners.
