KMA, IOM Establish Local Technical Committee to Strengthen Migration Governance

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), has established a Local Technical Committee (LTC) on Migration to strengthen coordination, collaboration and information sharing among key institutions within the governance structure of the Metropolis.

The Committee was inaugurated during its maiden meeting, which brought together representatives from various institutions to support a coordinated and holistic approach to addressing migration-related issues in Kumasi.

Speaking at the meeting, the Metro Coordinating Director of KMA, Mr Francis Dwira Darko, said migration is an integral part of human life and that Ghana, like many other countries, has its share of migration-related challenges.

“In Kumasi, we see them a lot on our principal streets and in certain known communities as well. It is glaring to all of us the issues that emanate from it,” he stated.

Mr Dwira Darko commended the partnership between KMA and IOM, particularly efforts to create awareness and strengthen institutional support in addressing migration-related challenges. He also acknowledged the Assembly’s commitment to the initiative, including the provision of office space to facilitate the Committee’s work.

He urged all stakeholders to put their shoulders to the wheel and support the city authorities in addressing migration-related challenges in a holistic, coordinated and sustainable manner.

The 12-member Committee comprises representatives from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Education Service, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Health Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the Ghana Enterprises Agency, among other relevant institutions.

The establishment of the LTC marks an important step towards building stronger institutional collaboration and promoting effective migration governance within the Kumasi Metropolis.
