Youthful Population Holds Great Promise, But We Face Cross-Border Challenges – Veep
Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang says that while West Africa’s youthful population holds great promise, the region also faces challenges that transcend national borders.
She made the remarks when she joined young people from across West Africa at the opening ceremony of the West Africa Youth Days in Accra.
In a post on Facebook, the Vice President said the event is hosted by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference in collaboration with the regional episcopal bodies of the Catholic Church, under the theme “Take Courage: Catholic Youth as Actors and Agents of Peace and Hope in West Africa.”
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang described the Catholic Church as an important partner in Ghana and across West Africa, contributing to education, healthcare and social development and demonstrating that faith and public service can work for the common good.
She told the young participants that the success of the conference will be measured in part by new friendships, greater understanding across cultures, and the ability to disagree without hostility.
According to her, this is especially important in the digital age, when misinformation and division can cross borders as quickly as knowledge and understanding, adding that young people have considerable influence in these spaces through what they share, how they engage with others, and the communities they build.
“Government, the Church and civil society have their responsibilities. Young people also have a part to play in building a West Africa in which difference need not become division, and peace is strengthened from one generation to the next,” she stated.
