Ghana Prisons Service Eyes Industrial And Agribusiness Ventures to Drive Inmate Reform

The Ghana Prisons Service is seeking to reposition prisons as centres for productivity and rehabilitation through strategic ventures in skills training, industry and agribusiness.

This came to light when the Director-General of the Service, Mrs Patience Baffoe Bonnie, called on the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, in Accra on Thursday, September 3, 2026.

The meeting aimed to court the Trade Ministry’s support for the Service’s priority programmes, which aim to transform prison facilities from solely custodial centres into hubs for skills development and production.

Mrs Baffoe Bonnie explained that the Service wants to scale up its training workshops and revive and expand its agricultural farms to equip inmates with hands-on, employable skills that will aid their re-entry into society and reduce re-offending.

She said that with the right technical and industrial support, prison facilities could produce goods, add value to agricultural produce and contribute meaningfully to the local economy, while improving the welfare and upkeep of inmates.

For her part, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare described the proposal as timely and aligned with the government’s agenda for inclusive industrial development and job creation.

She assured the Director-General that the Ministry would work closely with the Prisons Service to roll out practical initiatives that create opportunities, build skills and feed into the national development agenda.
