Teacher Unions Threaten Strike Over Delayed Salary Placement Of Promoted Teachers
A coalition of teacher unions has issued a warning of possible industrial action if teachers who have been promoted are not placed on their new salary scales by Monday, August 31, 2026.
The unions say the warning comes after a directive from the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department which they believe is inconsistent with an earlier commitment by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to place teachers who successfully completed the promotion process on their new grades by August.
They are therefore calling for all affected teachers to be enrolled on their appropriate salary scales by the close of work on Monday.
The unions have cautioned that should the deadline pass without the required placements, they may be unable to prevent their members from embarking on industrial action.
“We the teacher unions, we have no option than to make it clear that the automatic promotion of teachers or placement of teachers on the required grade as to where they should be on the promotion as of the results that came out, they should be put on their respective scales by close of work on Monday, 31st August, 2026,” General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Musah, said.
Mr Musah described the directive issued by the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department as unlawful and said the heads of the relevant agencies would be held responsible for any disruption resulting from the failure to implement the required placements.
“Failure to do so, whatever happens thereafter, His Excellency should hold the agency heads there responsible. We, the teacher unions, we cannot restrain any teacher from that particular day,” he said.
