Ghana Hosts 3-Day Workshop To Develop Strategy For AU Champion On Gender And Development

Ghana has commenced a three-day Strategy Co-Creation and Validation Workshop to develop a comprehensive strategy for the African Union Champion on Gender and Development for the period 2026-2028.

The workshop opened on Monday, August 10, 2026, and has brought together representatives from the African Union Commission, the Office of the President, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other key stakeholders.

The initiative follows the designation of the President of the Republic of Ghana as the African Union Champion on Gender and Development. It seeks to establish a clear strategic direction for the Champion’s mandate, priorities and interventions over the next three years.

In a statement delivered on her behalf by the Chief Director of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Marian W. A. Kpakpah, the Minister, Hon. Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, emphasised the importance of developing a strategy that would translate the Champion’s mandate into concrete actions and meaningful results for gender equality and development across the continent.

The Minister’s statement further highlighted the need for collaboration, effective coordination and strategic partnerships to advance the gender equality agenda and ensure that the Champion’s role contributes to tangible progress.

For the African Union Commission, the Director for Women, Gender and Youth (WGYD), Ms Prudence Nonkululeko Ngwenya, underscored the importance of shaping a focused and coherent strategic framework to guide the Champion’s work.

The workshop builds on a series of bilateral consultations and virtual preparatory meetings initiated by the AU Commission’s Women, Gender and Youth Directorate with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and other key national stakeholders.

Those engagements provided an opportunity to collate inputs on thematic pillars, priority outcomes and key deliverables towards the development of a comprehensive workplan for the Champion.

On the first day, participants are deliberating on the Champion’s comparative advantage, including the development of a shared vision, value proposition and theory of change to guide the Champion’s work.

Over the next two days, discussions will focus on strategic priorities and shifts, Presidential initiatives, implementation, partnerships and strategic investment, as well as measuring progress and accountability.

The three-day engagement is expected to culminate in a clear, practical and actionable strategic framework to guide the AU Champion’s efforts to advance gender equality and development across Africa during the 2026-2028 period.
