Ghana, Burkina Faso Sign Defence Cooperation To Secure Cross-Border Trade Routes

The Ministry of Defence has signed a Defence Cooperation Agreement with the Ministry of War and Patriotic Defence of Burkina Faso to provide security and escort support along vital cross-border trade corridors.

The agreement was signed by the Acting Minister for Defence, Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, and Burkina Faso’s Minister of State and Minister of War and Patriotic Defence, Major General Célestin Simporé.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi; Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr Emmanuel Kartey; Burkina Faso’s Ambassador to Ghana, Mr David Kabre; and the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong.

Also present were Directors of the Ministry, Heads of various Directorates of the Ghana Armed Forces, and members of the Burkinabè delegation.

According to the Ministry, the Defence Cooperation is aimed at safeguarding economic stability, securing critical supply routes, and strengthening bilateral defence ties between Ghana and Burkina Faso.

Officials noted that the agreement will enhance joint security operations along shared borders, ensure the safe movement of goods and people, and support regional trade integration.

The partnership comes at a time when both countries are working to address security challenges that threaten commerce and livelihoods in the sub-region.
