2026 SONA: Govt Considers Private Sector Participation for ECG Efficiency

President John Dramani Mahama‘s government is considering a private sector partnership with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The partnership will be in terms of billing and collection, he said while delivering the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, 2026.

According to him, this has become appropriate after the ECG’s continued high power losses.

Statistics, he referenced, indicated that around 25% of generated power is lost.

“To address this phenomenon and anchor the gains we have made, adopting private sector participation, particularly in billing and collection, is the most effective way to reduce these losses.”

In addition, he said the cabinet had approved the multiple leases for concessions in the distribution of utilities, and work is ongoing to implement this critical reform.

The SONA delivery is in line with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution.

It has attracted leaders and Civil Society organisations from across the nation, including Africa Education Watch, IMANI Africa and others.

The event is also graced by former President John Agyekum Kufour and Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.
