2025 SONA: There’ll Be No Secrecy in Govt Expenditure on National Teams – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has issued an order for the expenditure covering the budget of all national sporting teams’ activities to be made public.
According to him, the expenditure of the government on national teams including the Black Stars will no longer be held as secrets as he appreciates the fact that these budgets are funded with taxpayers’ money.
His Excellency thereby sees the need to share the expenditure with the public as their right.
Delivering the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, 2025, “I’ve instructed my office and the Minister for Sports and Recreation to hold the Ghana Football Association accountable to the people of Ghana as we prepare for these games, especially regarding the budget of the FA.
“There will be no secrecy in how much the government spends on the national teams. The budgets presented by the FA and other sports associations must be known to the public. After all, it is the taxpayer’s funds that are used to fund these activities.”
Additionally, he noted that his objective to cut profligate spending applies to all the national teams.
“The reduction in government expenditure and waste reduction applies to all sectors of the economy including the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.”
