2025 SONA: I Won’t Cancel Free SHS- Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has for the umpteenth time stated his intention to retain the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy introduced by the previous administration.
During his campaign across the country prior to the 2024 Presidential election during which he was elected for the second time, HE Mahama had served notice about his quest to keep the initiative despite criticizing it.
He had indicated that reforms would be done to make it effective.
This was reiterated on Thursday, February 27, 2025, while delivering his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament.
“For emphasis and for the record, I, John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, will not cancel the Free SHS programme.”
The policy was implemented by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2017 the same year he assumed office.
The policy though had been commended as a good initiative faced a lot of challenges including housing for students, feeding and many others. This prompted calls for reforms from stakeholders.
However, it was fiercely contested by the former President.
