2024 Voters Register is Fit- EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has defended the accuracy of the country’s electoral roll.

According to the Commission, the register for the 2024 elections is fit for purpose, contrary to speculations and claims by members of the opposition party.

“The 2024 Voters Register is robust and credible Ignore assertions that the Voters Register is not fit for the 2024 Elections.”

The country’s largest opposition party has consistently questioned the accuracy of the roll asserting that it is “sick” and therefore “not fit for purpose”.

In a series of write-ups, the Director of Elections and IT of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has raised concerns about the roll which contains 18,681,366 voters.

He has also called for a transparent audit of the voter register.

Dr Omane Boamah is not the only one in the NDC worried about the roll. Their Presidential Candidate, Mr John Dramani Mahama, also recently expressed concerns.

Speaking at a durbar of chiefs at Adjen Kotoku, he said, “The Electoral Commission opened the register for people to go and inspect their name. I’m sorry to say there is a lot wrong with that register. The EC has to sit up so that we don’t have any confusion on election day.”

“A lot of people cannot find their names. Others have their names transferred without their knowledge, people have registered for proxy without using their biometric cards, people who have done multiple registrations still have their names in the register.”

However, the EC in an infographic noted that the Exhibition is serving its purpose, that is, identifying errors and correcting them.

“The rationale for exhibiting Voters Register is to correct errors and omissions. It is only after all identified issues are corrected that the Final Register is printed for elections. This has been the practice since 1992.”
