2022 OCRC: Who Wins?
Five Contestants will today face each other for the bragging right and ultimate prize in the second edition of the Otumfuo Community Reading Challenge (OCRC).
The Otumfuo Community Reading Challenge is an initiative of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation (OOTIIF), a non-governmental organisation of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The competition is an English and Twi reading challenge meant to promote and imbibe the spirit of reading in Junior High School students.
The second edition of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation’s OCRC began on March 29, 2022, with four thousand six hundred and twenty (4, 620) students battling to be part of 60 contestants.
3,003 representing 65% were females whilst 1,617 representing 35% were males from some nine hundred and seventy (970) schools within sixteen (16) districts in the Ashanti Region.
This edition is under the theme “Promoting English and Twi reading in Asanteman.”
The challenge rides on three stages: the community stage, the Kick-out stage and the Final.
Antwi Boasiako Tiwaa, the representative of Maakro, Henrietta Diyour, representative of Obuasi, Melissa B. Saed, representative of Adum, Francisca B. Mensah, representative of Kotei and Lordina S. Agyapong, representative of Tafo, are the competitors left standing for the Grande Finale.
Gradually making their way up from the Community stage- where they competed with hundreds- to the Kick-out stage- where the all-female finalists battled their way out of 60 contestants representing some sixty communities- each showed exceptional English and Twi reading skills.
Yaa Antwi Boasiako Tiwaa
Tiwaa, representative of Maakro and a student of Andrews Adventist JHS is 14 years old.
She has carved a niche for herself with her prowess which put out communities including Bantama, Ayeduase, Atwima Techiman, Asokore Mampong and Breman.
Melissa Braimah Saeed
Melissa, also 14 years, is a student of KNUST JHS and represents Adum Community.
She beat communities including Trede, Daban, Moshie Zong, Ejisu and Ohwim to book a place in the Finals.
Lordina Serwaa Agyapong
Lordina, 15, representing Tafo Community is a student of Tafo-Pankrono M/A JHS ‘A’.
She defeated the Oforikrom community, Asawase community, Agric Nzema community, Ahinsan community, and Mamponteng community to remain in the competition.
Francisca Boakye Mensah
Francisca is also 15 years and a student of KNUST JHS representing the Kotei Community.
She is known for silencing communities such as Abrepo, Mamponteng, Kronum, Ayigya and Suame.
Henrietta Diyuor
Henrieta, 15, represents the Obuasi Community. Through her, the Obuasi community made their debut appearance in the competition this year.
The Obuasi Independence M/A JHS ‘B’ student didn’t just earn a slot for her community but has made it to the final stage after battling against and defeating the Anomanye community, Kaase community, Kona community, Krofrom Community and Buokrom Community.
The grand finale of the competition unfolds today at the Manhyia Palace, the seat of Asanteman.
From the trajectory of the five ladies, it can be told that the final stage won’t be an easy one.
So, who takes home the ultimate cash prize, the educational scholarship, products from sponsors and most importantly, THE BRAGGING RIGHT?
